Nolan Arenado has won three Gold Glove awards in three years.

Manager Bud Black isn’t focusing on the race either, only on the Rockies. Black said the best way to get Arenado hitting is extra batting practice and making sure he isn’t pressing, but that “there’s really no magic formula.”

Not everything went right, but center fielder Charlie Blackmon and third baseman were around to make sure 2017 turned out right for the Rockies in manager Bud Black’s first season.

Arenado, a two-time All-Star, won his fourth Gold Glove in four major league seasons this past week. He was also honored with his second straight Silver Slugger award after finishing the season with a major-league best 133 RBIs and NL-best 41 home runs.

“I have a couple buddies and I have a friend that tells me, ‘You want to be known as a guy that can play old-school ball,'” Arenado told MLB Network after the award was announced. “That’s kind of how I approached it. I’m not really the flashiest guy. I just try to play hard. I want to be known as an old-school baseball player.”

Arenado got off to a fast start against the Giants this season, hitting .367 with four home runs and 21 RBIs in his first 12 games against them. But he has only one RBI in his last five games against them.

Believe it or not, Arenado wasn’t always great at playing third base. There was a point when he treated it as something he had to do, like homework. That showed in scouting reports and prospect evaluations, as when Baseball America’s 2011 Prospect Handbook suggested his future was at first base. But that was written just before Arenado changed: He shed 20 pounds while applying himself and taking the benefits his coaches could provide.

Arenado has done early hitting at home, and he did it during an early-season trip to San Diego when he was struggling. Often he limits hitting during regular batting practice because of his playing time load. But with so much on the line, Arenado says he has plenty of energy for extra practice.

Granted, fielding measurements aren’t precise, especially for earlier generations, but there’s no arguing about the players above Arenado. All had excellent defensive reputations, with the possible exception of Boggs, though even he won two Gold Gloves late in his career.

Arenado said neither his agent nor the Rockies have broached a long-term deal, and he’s fine with that. He said the front office has rightfully been focused on solidifying the rotation and bolstering the bullpen to complement the Rockies’ powerful lineup and make Colorado competitive again.

The awards are determined by voting from each league’s managers and coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their players, plus 25 percent of the determination is based on the Society for American Baseball Research’s SABR Defensive Index. This year marks the first time the Rockies have had multiple Gold Glove Award winners since Arenado and LeMahieu also won together in 2014.

I love the announcers getting so excited, the fans getting so excited and the players getting so excited. It’s fun when you win! It’s the kind of memorable home run that can help Arenado in a close MVP vote.

In a season filled with highlight-reel plays at the hot corner, Arenado’s signature play for 2017 came at AT&T Park on June 28: He dove full-extension to his left to knock down a Ty Blach ground ball, grabbed it with his bare hand as it bounced away, spun on his rear end and made a Statcast-projected 117-foot throw across the diamond to get Blach at first. The play is a nominee for Best Defensive Play in the MLB Esurance Awards.

Arenado was hit by a pitch from Vance Worley. Following the Rockies’ 5-3 loss , Arenado said his hand was swollen and stiff, but he hopes to be sidelined for only a couple of days and avoid a stint on the disabled list.

Nolan Arenado reminded everyone on Sunday that his name deserves to be in the discussion for National League Most Valuable Player. Perhaps his team’s ascent to the best record in the National League is the platform Arenado has needed to show how good his game is.
